TOP TEN MOST OVERRATED FILMS I'VE SEEN (in general I've considered it more overrated if critics rate it really well and i hate then if it is a really popular film I hate)

10. The Godfather Pt. II (Francis Ford Coppola, 1974) [hey Francis Ford Coppola, shut up]
9. The Shining (Stanley Kubrick, 1980) [kubrick and nicholson! i might as well shoot myself in the face repeatedly!]
8. Don't Look Now (Nicolas Roeg, 1973) [god i hate donald sutherland, that smile he gives after the sex scene is perhaps my least favorite moment in all of cinema]
7. American Beauty (Sam Mendes, 1999) [not higher on the list because i believe people are starting to realize what a load of crap this is, maybe the worst edited film i've ever seen]
6. In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar-Wai, 2000) [i am pretty sure i am the only person who finds this film intolerable]
5. Peeping Tom (Michael Powell, 1960) [potentially the worst ending to a film I have ever seen]
4. Kiss Me Deadly (Robert Aldrich, 1955) [my best guess is this film is a joke pulled on the unsuspecting public by the critical elite]
3. E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982) [hailed as a children's classic, one of the most lackluster films i have ever seen, i bought it two years ago as i did not remember it at all, and watching it took over 4 hours because i kept stopping out of intense boredom]
2. Memento (Christopher Nolan, 2000) [not only one of the most overrated films but potentially in the top ten worst films I've ever seen catergory]
1. Throne of Blood (Akira Kurosawa, 1957) [Kurosawa is currently my favorite director and looking at a single frame of this film puts me to sleep. Of the 19 films of his I've seen, the only one I think is bad.]

ok, feel free to kick the shit out of me now

EDIT: I can't believe I totally forgot Cocteau's La Belle et La Bete, god, I keep seeing that movie, and I've never liked it, not once!

10 and 9, especially:

bloody hell, yes.

so no thrown punches?

wow, a positive response. The Shining isn't just overrated. It's a bad film. I'd say Godfather Pt. II is watchable, just no cinematic masterpiece. But I believe a little part of me died when I watched The Shining.

I think Godfather II and American Beauty are great films, but I can't say much about the rest of your list.

7. The Shining

Gotta talk fast, gotta eat, shave, shower and run out the door, have 48 minutes to do so

Throne of Blood I totally agree on(so dull!), comment I just left will indicate agreement on American Beauty front, The Shining I hate and we have talked about this before, ET holy shit I saw it in the re-release and it pained me how bad it is(I like John Williams' super manipulative score, though, it's the best thing about the movie), and Godfather II I have only seen parts of on cable one night while sleeping on the couch at a friend's house, but the parts I saw made me happy when I finally fell back asleep.

Most of my love for Kiss Me Deadly comes from the ending, which smacked me around hard and stuck in my head for days after I saw it, Wong Kar-Wai we have already discussed but it definitely pains me to see even E.T. listed above it in awesomeness, but seriously have you seen other Michael Powell movies because you might hate them too, like [info]danschank does.

I'll write my own one of these but it'll have to be tomorrow cause I am in such a hurry I wasted five minutes typing this shit oh noes run run run.

where is E.T. above In the Mood for Love

I enjoyed In the Mood more and thought it was less overrated than E.T.

In Kiss Me Deadly in order to escape interrogation a man takes sleeping pills and falls asleep. That's... the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. No other Powell films yet, though I love the title I Know Where I'm Going!

I look forward to yours.

Aw, I love Peeping Tom.

10. Irma Vep [Olivier Assayas, 1996] Ehh, maybe I don't care enough about French cinema to like this. Boring/confusing.
9. Breakfast at Tiffany's [Blake Edwards, 1961] - Racist and not nearly as charming as the novella.
8. Ong-Bak [Prachya Pinkaew, 2003] - Ugh, if one more person says this is better than Kung Fu Hustle I will slap a bitch. Flimsy and retarded editing.
7. Annie Hall [Woody Allen, 1977] - My favourite Woody but that isn't saying much.
6. Brazil [Terry Gilliam, 1985] - I do like it, but dystopias are only good when you're fifteen.
5. All the Real Girls [David Gordon Green, 2003] - I saw this after a Jodorowsky marathon, so that may be why I found it the most boring movie of the last few years.
4. Pierrot Le Fou [Jean-Luc Godard, 1965] - Bored white people do 'wacky' things in the most pretentious way imaginable. I hate Jean-Paul Belmondo's face. I wanna punch him.
3. Suspiria [Dario Argento, 1977] - Most renowned and personal least-favourite of prime-era Argento. There's better Italian horror out there, people!
2. City Lights [Charlie Chaplin, 1931] - Fuck you, Charlie.
1. Neco z Alenky [Jan Svankmajer, 1988] - Ugh, ugh, ugh. Worst editing and dubbing ever.

Re: Aw, I love Peeping Tom.

Whoawhoawhoa, City Lights and Annie Hall? I'm not a huge fan of comedies, to be honest, but Chaplin and Allen are easily my favorite comedic filmmakers, and those may very well be their respective best films. That's odd.

I've only seen George Washington by Gordon Green... if Terrence Malick was both in film school and in a coma, he might make this film.

Ong Bak is awful beyond comprehension.

Is Neco Z Alenky "Alice"? If so, I adore it.

[info]mistercreepy

January 29 2006, 06:17:20 UTC 6 years ago

get ready to slap a bitch

i enjoyed ong-bak immensely and was bored to tears furing kung fu hustle. so much cgi and so long. i couldn't take it.

Brazil is a yes. And Annie Hall is actually a yes too. I was going to put it on here, then I noticed it was in my top ten for my reordering of the AFI list. weird.

If I had ever gotten through Alice, it would be on my list. I couldn't take more than 5 minutes. I've never shut off a film after 5 minutes. unbelievably bad.

I watched my first Chaplin feature over winter break, Modern Times and realized I probably never have to watch another one again.

Re: Aw, I love Peeping Tom.

Agreed about 10 (so confusing!), 9,8, dystopias for teens, and Belmondo's face, but I still like Annie Hall! And while Charlie usually bores me to tears, The Great Dictator has a special place in my heart.

Good call

On Suspiria, Brazil and Annie Hall. Still like Ong-Bak, and I just thought of one for my own list because of it.

Breakfast at Tiffany's sure is racist, but I like it anyway.

The Shining is utter shit.

I don't see loving Kurosawa but not Throne of Blood, and I'm infatuated with In The Mood For Love. Ah well.

[info]mistercreepy

January 29 2006, 06:13:25 UTC 6 years ago

i am so glad to see all this Shining hate

for so long I thought I was alone.

My three least favorite Kurosawa I've seen are Throne of Blood, My Most Beautiful, and The Idiot.

Like other people, I still like In the Mood for Love, and honestly, I'm not really sure why, but I kind of enjoyed Don't Look Now. But my god man, how I hate 9,7,4,3, and 2. I like this idea for a list.

[info]chatjam

January 29 2006, 13:23:17 UTC 6 years ago

so, now that everyone hates that movie, american beauty will start to be defined as "underrated". oh, i do love that film. maybe just because it has the best falling-in-love scene ever made.

[info]bad_juice

January 29 2006, 17:21:50 UTC 6 years ago

Ew

Which scene are you referring to?

I wanna know, but it doesn't really matter which one it is because I disagree completely.

The only "best _______ scene ever made" contained in that movie is, maybe, best scene where Kevin Spacey jerks off in the shower ever made- and then it is only really by default.

being underrated

would imply that it had anything to offer. no rating is low enough to make it underrated.

and i hated it from my second viewing about 2 weeks before it won the Oscar. so now bandwagonism here.

My list, bitches

10. Dead Man - Jim Jarmusch(1995) [I always think people are lying when they say this is their favorite Jarmusch]
09. The Graduate - Mike Nichols(1967) [The more I think about him the more I hate Dustin Hoffman]
08. Downfall - Oliver Hirschbiegel(2004) [Never has child murder been so boring]
07. Dr. Strangelove - Stanley Kubrick(1964) [I used to love this, but then I realized I was right when I first saw it... Slim Pickens isn't funny at all]
06. Apocalypse Now - Francis Ford Coppola(1979) [Hey this movie is not very affecting at all]
05. The Exorcist - William Friedkin(1973) [Except I like the "Let Jesus fuck you" part]
04. Cannibal Holocaust - Ruggero Deodato(1980) [This shit is way pretentious for a movie about eating people]
03. What Time is it There? - Tsai Ming-Liang(2001) [There's no excuse for this movie being two hours long]
02. Jules and Jim - Francois Truffaut(1962) [I'd like to punch Jeanne Moreau in the face]
01. Raging Bull - Martin Scorsese(1980) [How many times in a row can a person really watch Robert De Niro get fucking pissed off]

Too obvious to make the list:
Aliens, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Schindler's List, Lawrence of Arabia, Lord of the Rings

Others that missed out on the fun:
Network, Oldboy, Kung Fu Hustle, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, L'Age d'Or, Drunken Master 2, Shock Corridor

Re: My list, bitches

Apocalypse Now almost made my list, too. I hope to never see Jules et Jim.

[info]bad_juice

January 29 2006, 19:31:05 UTC 6 years ago

Not seeing Jules and Jim is among the highest things I can recommend a person to do

How do you feel about Dead Man? I don't really hate it, but it's maybe my least favorite of the Jarmusch I've seen. I haven't seen Night on Earth yet, though(I am kind of avoiding it).

yes yes yes

apocalypse now only fell because i feel like godfather pt ii is more highly rated, i actually despise apocalypse now more.

exorcist is a gimme. dr. strangelove i disagree on, and perhaps the only Kubirck I enjoy.

Network, you're just wrong. Wronger than I am about In the Mood for Love. I want to see The Hospital, the other Chayefsky, but my library doesn't have it.

Martin Scorcese in general is overrated...

1. Anything by Mel Brooks
Especially History of the World, Spaceballs, Blazing Saddles, and Young Frankenstein.
2. Anything by Wong Kar-Wai
Especially 2046, In the Mood For Love, and Happy Together.
3. Blade Runner
4. Battle Royale
5. Dawn of the Dead
6. Annie Hall
7. The Graduate

The only ones of these I actually dislike or hate are all Mel Brooks movies and Blade Runner. The rest are all pretty good, just not totally amazing like people seem to think they are.

January 30 2006, 16:28:04 UTC 6 years ago

I love Dawn of the Dead (original, not seen remake)

no L'Avventura?!?

February 20 2006, 05:45:30 UTC 6 years ago

I think the only reason I don't hate E.T. is that it's sort of a childhood memory that I rather liked -- it was one of my first films ever so I can't really insult it. And The Godfather: Part II has to be one of my favorite movies. In a way, I kind of agree with you about American Beauty ... it really wasn't that great.

My list:
1. The Shawshank Redemption (#2 on IMDb Top 250? WTF)
2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (stupid movie with no point)
3. Monsters, Inc. (animated movie that everyone loves)
4. Amelie (the point: some shy girl trying to get a guy and at the end has sex with him ... yay?)
5. Forrest Gump (some dumb guy who achieves everything)
6. Kung Fu Hustle (some cartoonish kungfu adventure that has won almost every single foreign film award)
7. L.I.E. (I still need someone to explain this to me ...)
8. Titanic (speaks for itself)
9. All of the LOTR. (overrated. period.)
10. Dances with the Wolves (Dances with the dogs ...)

[info]mistercreepy

February 20 2006, 05:58:47 UTC 6 years ago

do people really still praise Titanic?

i guess i don't give 14 year old girls much merit, so i've never really thought of that film as over praised since no one actually enjoyed it

james cameron has a decent sense of how to use a camera though.
